Belur Math in Howrah Continues to Celebrate Durga Puja with Unchanged Rituals and Grandeur for Over a Century
In 1901, Swami Vivekananda initiated the Durga Puja at Belur Math, marking a tradition that has stood the test of time, keeping its rituals and grandeur intact for over a hundred years.
Swamiji's decision to begin this Puja was driven by several factors, including the need to challenge the orthodox Hindu society of Calcutta, which was deeply entrenched in caste segregation and had reservations about his Western travels and interactions with people of all castes. This Puja served as a platform for Swamiji to promote his new ideology, dispel misconceptions, and gain acceptance for his vision, ultimately giving rise to the celebrated Durga Puja of Belur Math.
